Summer Reading Garden

Our Summer Reading Garden will also open at Church Street windows, overlooking St Mary’s Church, on Monday 25th July. All the books at the Summer Reading Garden are provided by Luton Libraries, who are running Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge 2022, which is produced by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with libraries. The Summer Reading Challenge takes place in local libraries every year for children to choose their reading goal, then choose any books to read to collect special stickers and other rewards along the way – all for FREE. There is a digital platform too, so the fun can carry on at home!

Meet and greet sessions

Every Thursday from 28th July, meet and greet sessions with classic children’s book characters will take place in Central Square for fans to grab a selfie.

28th July - Paddington Bear
4th August - The Gruffalo
11th August - Peter Rabbit
18th August - Diary of a Wimpy Kid
25th August - The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Paddington Bear, Peter Rabbit and The Very Hungry Caterpillar will also host storytelling sessions during their visits, for visitors to hear classic tales from the stars of the stories. Meet and greets are at intervals between 11am and 4pm.

Creative writing competition

Throughout the summer we will be offering two children the chance to win £125 for themselves and £250 worth of books each for their school. We are looking for stories and poems based around your favourite book character or adventure, and we want you to be as creative as you like!

Entries can be done at school or at home and if you need some extra help then come to our Reading Garden on Mondays between 11am - 4pm where there will be a helper on hand to assist with ideas for your entry.

To submit your entry you can bring them to the Reading Garden every Monday, hand them in to the Ask Me Point during opening hours, email them to, or post to The Mall Luton Writing Competition, Mall Management, 37 The Mall, Luton LU1 2HN

Please include your name, age, school and contact details when submitting your entry. The competition will be judged in two age categories 'age 7 and under' and 'age 8+'.
