Celebrate Lunar New Year in Maidstone

Come and enjoy Maidstone's Lunar New Year 2025 celebrations on Saturday 1 February as the “Eye-dotting” ceremony awakens the dazzling Chinese Lions in Jubilee Square at 12 noon, who will then playfully prowl the town centre.

In addition, hear authentic sounds from the SOAS musical ensemble playing traditional silk and bamboo music of the Shanghai tea houses along with beautiful music from the Chinese Opera. Enjoy classical folk dances from China and Korea performed by popular solo artist Zihan Liu.

Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is working with Cohesion Plus and Maidstone Cultural Group to bring these colourful, energetic Lunar New Year celebrations to the town centre.

Cllr Stephen Thompson, Cabinet Member for Healthier Stronger Communities at MBC said: “This vibrant, cultural Lunar New Year celebration is a really great way to start the year and always attracts hundreds of people so remember to put the date in your diaries and come along to enjoy the fun. Its free to attend and really brings the town centre to life.”

Gurvinder Sandher MBE DL from Cohesion Plus is producing the event, he said: “The Lunar New Year Celebrations in Maidstone are now well established and have developed into some of the biggest in Kent.  This year we have put together another great programme for the community to enjoy from traditional dancing to music and the hugely popular dragons.  There will be something for all ages to enjoy in and around Maidstone Town Centre.”
